We picked up the HDR-HC3 a couple months ago, and we love it. While there is not a standard mic port, there is a hot shoe which takes a shotgun mic. We edit with Sony Vegas Movie Studio. Once you get used to creating intermediary files for editing, it's just like editing regular DV, just better looking. We could have waited for the next generation of cameras, but then we would would not be watching our movies in gorgeous HD.

I grabbed the HDR-HC1 last year as soon as I saw the HDR-HC3 pre-release without the external microphone. Also picked up the HDR-HC3 anyway and use it predominantly for video that I already know I am going to voice over or score a soundtrack. Both work well for what I got them for although the larger size of the HC1 makes it easier to handle. I've also been able to move to hard drive recording using the FireStore FS series of direct-to-edit recorders ( from Focus Enhancements). Whatever camcorder you are using just make sure your camera is supported or you will need to first start the record on the Firestore and then the camera. In any event it works well, cuts out the real-time copy from tape to computer, permits editing directly on the device, supports HD/HDV, and you have a good archival backup on the tape. Format is .m2t (among others) which is native in many editors (Vegas for example). Lots more of these types of devices coming on the market... Looking forward to seeing the HDR-SR1, (external mic input has returned) once the major editors support the AVCHD format; should be fairly soon.

The sr1 external mic sucks..if you plan on using it..be prepaired for lots of noise when you hit record... and don't waste your money on a beachtek unit..they didn't design around this problem either

IF YOU BUY A VMCK100 ADAPTER FROM SONY..THERE IS NO EXTERNAL MIC NOISE..UNLIKE USING THE ON CAMERA PLUG...NO MORE HARD DRIVE NOISE THE SECOND YOU HIT RECORD!!!!!!!!!
