CBS will use MICROSOFT's new Silverlight technology to enable user-generated content on the sites of CBS-owned stations. The sites will mix station-owned content with UGC. Launch is expected for later this year.

US NEWSPAPER circulation fell 2.1% between October and March. The New York Times was down 1.9%. However, The WSJ was up 0.6%, and USA Today was up 0.2%. At the extremes: The Dallas Morning News lost 14.2%. Impressive weekday gains were posted by The New York Post (7.6%) and the NY Daily News (1.4%). Sunday circulation fell 3.1% across the board.

VERIZON's landline business is shrinking. It lost 408,000 primary landline subscribers in the first quarter. However, it added 141,000 new subscribers to FiOS, its new fiber-based TV service.

UTILITY.NET is launching a test of Broadband Over Powerline (BPL) in 10,000 Michigan homes.

BBC will launch iPlayer, an online on-demand service in November.

VH1 unveiled an improved site for watching classic music videos online.
