If you are a fan of Foundation, Second Foundation and all of the Isaac Asimov books that he wove together and tied back to iRobot, you won't recognize anything about the new Will Smith movie except the title. That being said, it is extraordinary, mindless, summer entertainment. Two thumbs up.

Daily readers will recall my dismissal of the RealNetworks hack of iTunes/iPod technology as not that important. It isn't. But, Steve Jobs is "stunned that RealNetworks has adopted the tactics and ethics of a hacker to break into the iPod." Rob Glaser shot back, "Consumers, and not Apple, should be the ones choosing what music goes on their iPod." Well, that should clear it up! It will take Apple software gurus about 10 seconds to nullify the Real hack - so why make it an issue? Obviously, Rob and Real are upset that Apple won't do a deal with them. Is this a negotiating tactic? I don't think so. Rob Glaser is way too smart. This is just an example of rivals not understanding each other. Any student of Apple, or should I say any supplicant of Apple, knows that the mantra, "proprietary system" is chanted five times a day while facing a shrine to the 6500 chip that started it all. Chant it slowly, pro-pri-e-tary sys-tem, pro-pri-e-tary sys-tem, pro-pri-e-tary sys-tem. Remember the cartoon: "Welcome to heaven ... here's your Apple ... welcome to hell ... here's your PC."
